W5 - Student Learning in Graduate Programs: Rigor, Assessment, and Quality
Whether stimulated by accreditation, an increasingly diverse and competitive higher education environment, or inspiration to take their programs to the next level, many institutions are ready to examine the rigor and quality of their graduate degrees more intentionally. This deeper dive tends to reveal some key organizing questions: How clearly do our program designs differentiate between graduate and undergraduate learning outcomes? Are the graduate-level culminating experiences – typically theses, projects, comprehensive exams – directly linked to program learning outcomes (PLOs)? How can we embed regular assessment of graduate PLOs without distracting from research, scholarship, and creative projects? We will address these questions and more in this interactive, hands-on workshop. Bring your PLOs, your questions, the challenges and the promising practices from your programs as we explore program design, assessment, and continuous improvement of our graduate programs. Practical tools, conceptual models, and strategies for engaging faculty will be infused throughout.
Kathleen Roe is Professor of Public Health and former Chair of the Health Science and Recreation Department at San José State University, where she has been since 1988. Kathleen is also the founder and faculty director of the university's Alternative Spring Break in Oaxaca, Mexico. In her teaching, Kathleen is committed to community-based learning, praxis, and leadership for equity and social justice; her courses cover such areas as public health, multicultural communication, community organizing, research methods, community health promotion, and leadership. Kathleen’s research interests center around the ways in which ordinary people become deeply engaged in the issues of their time, with the goal of creating the kind of society in which everyone has “the freedom of confident action.” She has fostered collaboration with the local Mexican immigrant community; has published in health education, public health, and related journals; was a founding editor of Health Promotion Practice, and has received numerous awards. Kathleen served as Faculty Chair of SJSU’s previous WSCUC accreditation review and is currently leading a university-wide initiative regarding the meaning, quality, and integrity of the university’s graduate degrees. She has also led three successful accreditation reviews of the SJSU MPH program by the Council on Education for Public Health and was Co-Chair for several years of the National Task Force on Quality Assurance in Health Education Professional Preparation. Her degrees are from the University of California at Berkeley.
Carl Kemnitz serves as the deputy provost for San José State University, an urban comprehensive regional university in the heart of Silicon Valley. About 35,000 students seek degrees at SJSU, including 8,000 graduate students. The deputy provost advises and represents the provost for a broad spectrum of academic initiatives and oversees the work of the academic associate vice presidents. Prior to joining SJSU, Kemnitz served in a variety of faculty and administrative roles at California State University Bakersfield, including associate vice president for academic programs, dean of undergraduate and graduate studies, accreditation liaison officer, associate dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, director for successful STEM diversity programs, academic senate leadership, chemistry department chair and faculty member.
